Backpack Journey 2007 - Transfer flight in Taiwan
China, Taiwan, Travel, Blah Blah Blah August 8th, 2007
Here I am! After 13 hours flight from LA to Taipei, I am sitting in front of the free Internet store and type this blog. I will fly to Hong Kong in just about two and half hours. The funny thing is that I use Yahoo Messenger to call my brother in Taiwan. It’s actually connect to the Yahoo voice server in the US and calling to Taiwan from there. So the voice delays, but OK.
We took the EVA flight from LA to Taipei. I was not sleep very well, because I can’t even finish all new release movies on the flight. I was four movies in 12.5 hours. Had two meals. Many cups of water and many chocolate cookies. Not a bad flight. The new 777-300 airplane is very comfortable and roomy. I think I will recommend you to take EVA airline. If you ever flight between Taiwan and other countries.
I will keep you all updated when even I have chance.

China Airlines is good too. They make service on North American airlines look like crap. By the way, it’s too bad you couldn’t stay in Taiwan for a few days. You might have gotten lucky and had the wonderful experience like I did of losing your voice due to all of the smog and pollution in the cities from millions of mopeds / motorbikes.
Did you see the sign when you got off the plane that said “Drug Trafficking Is Punishable By Death!”

@Former Backpacker:
Thank you for stopping by. I know a lot of things about Taiwan. I lived there the first 28 years of my life.
I admit that the air pollution is very bad there and I don’t like the earthquake. So I moved to US.
I have now just land in Hong Kong with Typhon ..

I have just come back for Taiwan, i was there from the 28 July till now, we had to get out before a little Typhon, but i loved the country and there was little pollution, I only have one lung and did not suffer, Yilan is just gorgeous and so is Taipei, I will go back, I am 67 and thought the people were beautifully well mannered and very calm. Just loved it

@viviane:
Yeah. I hate the pollution in Taiwan, but I love the foods there. I am glad that you like Yilan. Let me know if you visit Taiwan again. I can give you some suggestions.

I hate the pollution and traffic in Taiwan too. I was there for only 1 week.
My brother worked in Taiwan for serveral years maintaining the airplanes for EVA. He was not interested in any promotion. Anyway, he passed his exams and was promoted. In a junior position, if anyone in the department was discovered to have make a mistake, the whole team would have to pay to the Company. The more senior you are, the more you will have to pay.
If the engineering/maintenance team have to pay for their mistakes, I believe all will have to work hard to the best of their knowledge and ability to make sure that the planes are in super condition. So I think it’s a good bet. But I have not flown on one yet.

@Jesie:
WOW. I did not know that the staff have to pay back to the company. That does NOT sound a good offer to the employees. I just don’t think EVA’s on flight service is good enough.

good for you! i just visited taiwan this past summer and it was amazing - the food, night markets, the shopping, the people, the atmosphere…I just love it and miss it when I’m back in boring America.

@gale:
That’s right. I miss the food there. The funny thing was that I have to transfer flight, but I don’t have time to visit my friend in Taiwan. Well. I am sure you can find some good Taiwanese food in US.
Thank you for stopping by!

Terence,
The technical team of the engineering company that maintains EVA airplanes have to pay a penalty for making any minor error so that they are more careful.
But I never knew the crew on EVA is not that great on its inflight service. I wonder what will happen if they too have to pay a penalty for complaints on their service.

@Jesie:
I hope they do pay. The services is getting worst and worst. I don’t think I will ever flight with EVA. I could not even get a cookie on the flight. Their booking system sucks too. I was unable to find any return flight to US until a day before the departure. Anyway, I have heard that too much political involvement between Taiwan Gov and the company.
By the way, their airplane is better than many other airline companies though.
