I was reading some news about the success story of Zappos.com. – The number one online footwear store. If you don’t know anything about Zappos, You can read the following news on CNN. Shoe In – Zappos has become the No. 1 footwear retailer on the Web by making customer service a competitive weapon.

Personally, I am also a satisfied Zappos customer, but I am not here to promote Zappos. I was amazed by how a start-up company growing so fast in so little time. I don’t want to repeat their success story here. What I really like to do is to think how the rest of us can learn from Zappos.

While reading the news, I decided to follow Zappos CEO Tony on Twitter.

I decided to send Tony a short question. He is following over 5300+ people on twitter. So I did not expect to receive his answers. I simply asked the following question.

What would you suggestion small retailers who don’t have $M to grow like Zappos?

In few minutes, he replied my question with the following answer.

Provide a unique customer experience that your customers will love and develop a personal emotional connection with… it doesn’t have to cost a lot of $, just make your store experience unique, memorable, and addicting

Hmm… Tony is very active on Twitter. Shortly after sending him a follow up, I got few more Zappos folks following me suddenly. OK. That’s surprise. That includes Zappos’ COO, Warehouse manager, recruiting manager and so on.

What amazed me is that Zappos really embrace the new technology to help them grow their business. That’s also not my point here either. I then discovered old news on CNN that mentioned Zappos. You can read it on CNN about Start Last, Finish First – Have an idea for a startup that could challenge an industry leader? There’s never been a better time to come late to the race.

This news did get me thinking how we can become the next Zappos. Zappos is not the first one selling shoes on the Internet, but they finished first and became the largest one. It’s very inspirational to people like me, who really want to get their life going to the next level.

I always have fears to do something that I don’t even have clues. Afraid of being a loser, I often became a really loser at the end. I don’t believe that Tony knows about shoes that much at beginning, but he has turned his business into the shoes retail giant. Even Zappos started with $M funding and a lot of investment from other sources, they only started making profit two years ago. It took Zappos about 7+ years to become profitable. That’s something a small business should learn about. It takes time to get real profit, if you don’t give up too quick.

I did more reading on Zappos’ blog. I found a great presentation that CEO Tony presented recently. You can see the slide show about Get $1 Billion. Don’t pay attention on how the grow and how much money they have made. Pay attention on those 4 things you need to get $1 Billion.

Now, my real challenge is not what I will be doing and not how fast I will be doing. It’s about how I accomplish those things with minimum budget, since I don’t have $M to spend. However, Like Tony said earlier. “It doesn’t have to cost a lot of $.” Well it’s easier say than done, but I agree with him 100%. They are not the first case study to prove it.

To be honest, at the moment of this writing, I feel that I am lost in the forest like the image above. I almost forgot that I have all the materials and resources to build my business. I just need to turn the trees into the solid wood and build from them. That’s it!

I think this post will be read by many people, because Zappos’ COO Aflred just sent me a twit asking me to send him this post URL. Anyway, I have to thank Tony and Zappos folks for following me on Twitter and inspiring me with fresh new challenge.

Few days ago, I was walking on the street after meeting with fashion jewelry manufacture and fashion jewelry wholesaler. I saw a small Chinese carrot cake vendor at the corner of a small alley. I saw a long waiting line. Many people are waiting in line to get so-called “the best carrot cake in town”. I was unable to stay longer enough to get mine. The line was about half mile long. There are at least 400 people waiting in line. So I picked few people and asked them why they like it and how much they like it.

I was NOT surprised by the answers. My questions were “Why are you waiting in line? Are these cakes so good?”

These are the summary of the answers.

• Oh. I don’t know. I just heard the TV news about it.
• I saw the review on magazine.
• My friend told me to come.
• Oh. I just walk by and see the crowd. So I assume they are really good. So I want to give it a try.
• The cake looks very good and tasty.

Regardless how the vendor got on TV or magazine, the word of mouth brings in the customers. They must have done some good to boost their business and build their reputation.

This inspired me to think how this small vendor got so much attention and become a success story on my blog.

These are the facts about them.

• First of all, they only offer 4 different types of cakes. They don’t have a lot of items to sell. Just four different fried cakes.
• They only offer few thousands a day and up to two cakes per person. First come and first get. They will close the booth when the cakes are sold out. You can buy more than two, but you have to wait in line again.
• They are open from 7:30AM to 1:30PM. The timing seems critical. People will buy them for breakfast, for brunch or for lunch.
• They use very good ingredients. The cake looks very fresh and smells good. People who bough them were giving thumbs up and compliment. “WOW, Taste so good, so full, the best cake I ever have, etc.”
• They are very nice to every one. They say hi, thank you and come again to every customers with a soft tone. It’s like buying coffee at Starbucks. The staffs are so nice.
• There is a senior hospital near by. I think older people who more likely are the one to spread the words and become return customer. The will tell their friends, families and neighbors to come.
• Work efficiently and response quickly. There are only three people working as a team. They cover each others.

So what are the secrets that make this small vendor a success?

• Right Niche. Do what they can do best. They definitely know what they can do best and focus on it.
• Availability. They know quantity is an important tactic to boost sales. They don’t over sell. They make people wanting to come back later.
• Timing. They understand when the cake is best for breakfast, brunch and lunch.
• Quality products. Without the good quality products, people won’t come back. Reputation makes big sale. I think that’s one of the reason TV and magazine comes.
• Best customer services. Smile is always the first impression of a successful business. A pretty smile and customer services will bring people back.
• Location, location, location. They are on the right spot that have traffic.
• Work together like a winning team. They set goals clearly. Everyone is on the same page.

I think the above 7 secrets will help me to boost my online stores business as well. I just need a little creative to transform the ideas and implement them into my business model. I am sure there are a lot of works to do to make my business a success, but I am willing to take on the challenge and make thing happen.

Mark at mytropicalescape.com quits his job and become the true entrepreneur on his own. He acts quick and got few guest posts on ProBlogger.net already. From Zero to Entrepreneur in Five Easy Steps – Today Is That Day shows you how he did it.

Those are just few of the people I know acting quicker than their dream. They will achieve what they have been dreaming. What are those have in common?

• They know what they want.
• They have plan about how to achieve.
• They talk about it.
• They act fast.
• They keep moving forward.

They are really someone, who I want to learn from as I am trying to achieve my goal and chase my dream. They are on my watch list. I got motivation from them as well.

Just a day after I post “Clone the success story and make your own legend“, John Chow has brought us great news today “Photo Shoot With Entrepreneur Magazine.” His will be featured on one of my favorite magazine on Entrepreneur.com.

He is one of the most famous icons in the blogging world now. A great blogger, who are so smart and as evil as many people called him, has earned himself a greatest award. He is moving forward again. As a blogger, we all learn something from others. John Chow has been one of the source of learning new tips and tricks about make money online. If you want to make profit off your blog, you got to read his blog. I mean every single post.

What John Chow has shown us can be describe in just one sentence. “It’s All About The Brand.” This is what exactly I learned these days. A good marketing strategy will bring a poor image into a great image. It’s not saying that John Chow was bad. It simply means that branding can bring a winter into spring. It can make a great becoming the greatest.

What we need to learn is to believe that we can be the greatest. We can learn from the greatest out there and make ourselves the greatest too. A book that I have read inspired me a log. If you want success, you have to make change and find your weakest point. Learn how to deal with it.

Now. It’s my turn to make my own legend and become the evil one. First. I have to admit that I was not an Internet Marketing expert. I have been doing programming for so long and did not pay too much attention on the marketing. In the past few weeks, I have learned a log and apply some of the technique to my existing online stores. It’s moving forward and making good progress. It’s not good enough. If I ever want to achieve my billionaire dream, I need to do much more than John Chow was doing and be more creative.

Personally, I don’t think a good company will do well without a good marketing strategy. Of course, a good company won’t last long if they don’t have good products. I have the good products. Now I need to boost my marketing skills to make my products stand out.

My goal is to boost my online stores sales in 2008 and push all my stores to the first pages of all search engines. I have plan, but I won’t release that here. I will release those tasks I have done here just like John Chow did on his blog. If I fail, … No! There is no failure here.

Would you smile all the way to New Year like the Christmas girls, if you find out you just lost 2/3 revenue in your ultimate sexy online store? I don’t think I will smile tonight, but I am sure will smile again when this problem is fixed.

For those who knows my sexy business for all sexy ladies, I have just lost 2/3 revenue in two days. That’s really bad news. Look at the bright side, I found the problem before it gets worst. I have tried many ways to get my sexy shoes and sexy lingerie store on the Google front page for months. I did it very well. I was able to search “Sexy Shoes” and find my site on #1 Google search engine result page #5 spot. It has been this way for months. It has brought in a lot of business due to the “Sexy shoes” and relevant keywords. Now. I have just lost 2/3 of my business because that my site was no longer on the first page at all. It’s not even on the first 10 pages.

What went wrong?

I have to admit that I am not 100% SEO expert, but I have learned so much since I start programming 10 years ago. When I started my new ultimate sexy store at www.angelsdesire.com early this year, I decided to optimize my store as much as I can without spending a dime. My SEO cost is actually my time and energy on social networking with other web site owners. So far, I have NOT spent a dollar on advertisement.

This site is less than one year old and has generated more revenue than I expected. I tweak and tweak the web site title, Meta tag and description and finally get my site on #5 spot of Sexy shoes keywords. My site was among other high ranking competitors’ web sites, which has generated million dollars annual sales.

Now I just lost the game. I believe I can get in the game in few days. So I changed my title back with minor modification. I totally realized that how important the web site title is!

The web site title was “Sexy Thigh High Boots | Exotic Shoes | Fetish Shoes | Sexy …“, which brings my site to the #5 spot on the first page. Last month, I added new sexy lingerie product line to my site. So I modify the site title to “Sexy Lingerie | Exotic fetish lingerie | Sexy thigh high boots | Exotic Shoes …”

As you can see, the Sexy Shoes is push down to the third keywords. Two days later, I cannot find my site with “Sexy Shoes” keywords on Google. Not ever on the first 10 pages. OMG! My online order suddenly drops to 1/3 of my regular amount.

I have to do the damage control and try to get my site back up on the #5 spot. I don’t know how Google will re-rank my site, but I think it should not take too long to get my site back on the first page. I can only hope!

What lesson have I learned? I hope you learn something from me by avoiding the small mistake, which cost a lot! Make sure your web site keyword is not dramatically changed! Make sure you optimize your web site keywords in the <title> tag.

Don’t make the same mistake I did. It costs me fortune!

It’s never too late to start your own branding. I am not trying to be a big name blogger out there. I want to be recognized as a success role model in the e-business world. As I stated in my about page, I want to show people that it’s easy to be a success entrepreneur, if you have the guts to do so. I want people to recognize me as Terence Chang.

So I decided to go back on MySpace.com.

I was never a fan of MySpace.com. I just get used to their template stuff. Many of the members made their page so hard to read. I have a clean one. MySpace.com has released theme editors in Beta. It allows me to do some minor changes to my pages. It’s good enough.

I will start using MySpace as one of the social networking tools to get my name recognized. Watch me! Here is my goal of 2008. I have been very success on getting my name on all search engines. You can pretty much find me and this blog on any search engines by search “Terence Chang.” What I want to achieve in 2008 is be able to be known by many Internet users who are trying to make money online by being their own boss.

I have been making progress everyday. I am one step closer to my goal of being a billionaire. I want to be a successful Internet Entrepreneur and also a well known motivator. I always believe that a person’s success is built on top other people’s success. So by helping other succeeded in their life will help me successes mine too.

No surprise! Oprah Winfrey, the billionaire TV host, is now a stumbler! I was wondering what she is up to.

I guess one of her marketer sign her up! It will be very interesting to see how she review people’s page. I am not a big fan of Oprah show, but I do like what she has done to help many poor people. Regardless her fortune, she is just a normal persona like us.

It’s not surprise that the first two pages she reviewed are her own myspace.com account and her official web site. I don’t know if StumbleUpOn has anything to do with it or not. Creating a buzz some big name will definitely do some trick.

Can I have Oprah on my site as a guest?

I don’t think she need to get StumbleUpOn traffic. However, I do believe there is some business deal going on to promote StumbleUpOn. I believe we will see some news floating on the Internet soon.
