Fastest response from MediaTemple.net – Awesome

May 22, 2007 7:27 pmTerence Chang

I was so surprised by how fast MediaTemple.net staff are doing something out of their tech support. I have just post a blog about my experience with MediaTemple.net web hosting few hours ago. You can read it from here. Experience with MediaTemple.net Grid Server Hosting. Now I have a comment from Arman@MediaTemplet.net, who made some corrections about my statements.

That is fast. I guess they have some sort of Blog watching list with keywords of their company name “Media Temple”. Again, that is also how fast I got the answer when I called them for tech support.

I need to make some corrections. Yes. Now I know MediaTemple.net does provide multiple FTP accounts for add-on domains. I was not fully test out their control panel, which is their own control panel. Also, I miss-taken GS as Grid Server while it should be Grid Services.

For the past few weeks, I am so happy with their server performance. My client is one of the top known brandname companies in art and painting industry. They will eventually move their server to dedicated server. I just hope for the next few months or years, MediaTemple.net can continue to provide awesome service and stable server performance.

I would love to be their reseller since I will recommend their service to anyone who can afford $20+/m to get good hosting package. I will keep good eyes on the performance of MediaTemple.net and post my experience here. If MediaTemple.net staff reads this blog again, they’d better keep their promise and make sure the server is running as it should. Otherwise, a good mouth may become a bad mouth.

Just Kidding! ;-)

Experience with MediaTemple.net Grid Server Hosting

May 22, 2007 9:34 amTerence Chang

While I was researching on my next hosting provider. I was also looking into a new reliable web hosting for my client. I have decided to host my own site at ANHosting.com. And My client decided to host their site on MediaTemple.Net‘s Grid Server, which costs a little bit more than ANHosting’s US$7.00. MT charges $20/M to get hosted on their Grid Servers. It’s a different hosting platform. I am not technical enough to tell you how that works, but I can tell you that my client is happy with it.

One thing it comes to my mind after move my client’s site to MT is that there grid server is not for reseller or someone wants to setup many add-on domains with their own FTP account. Grid Server give you one FTP account that access all domains. You can add up to 100 add-on domains. It’s primary for serious webmaster to fully control their own web sites or web applications.

I also heard few people complaints MT on the internet. Their Grid Server is not so stable. I can tell that the speed was not faster than ANHosting, but it’s acceptable from my point of view. It has never down since I moved the sites a month ago (April 2007). One think make me comfortable is that MT promise easy migration when it’s time to move on to higher end server. They also have MySQL container, which claims to be high performance and dedicated resource to the account.

Just like I did to ANHosting.com. I have called and called and chat with MT prior I move my client’s web site to their server. I want to make sure that their services are as good as it claims to be. I called at 3:00AM pacific time over the weekend. They have someone over there answering the phone. Although his voice sounds tired (me as well), he did answer question professionally. I was happy how capable the tech support is. He walks me through the setup process.

MT do not provide cpanel which is used in most of Linux based web hosting. However, I am technical enough to understand their interface. Just one thing that I am not so sure.

They don’t have daily backup. They have weekly backup. You will need to either pay more or to schedule your own daily backup. Since they have grid server and redundant disk storage, I don’t know if daily backup is that necessary.

Again, I give MT grid server two thumbs up!

To run a small online business requires a lot of energy and attention on every details. It have been a good practice for me to use some of the free services to help operate my business.

Google Calendar is a wonderful tools for me and my partners to share the events and remember what have been done. Most importantly, when the stuff were done. So I can come back to search the even few months later. We will know how we are doing.

Google Analytics is a great web tools to analyze the web site traffic. It allows a company to see how their web site is doing for their business. It has nice charting report showing the performance of the web pages. It also provides the marketing view of the reports.

AIMPhoneLine provides a free local phone number that I can use as my business contact number. Since I am doing online business, I pretty always online with AIM running on my desk. I can pickup the phone at any time. With reasonal montly fee, I can make calls to 35 countries with no extra charges. This is wonderful. I also get a good voicemail services which will notify me through email and text message on cell phone, when I am on the road. I can just dial the local number on my cell phone to listen to the voicemail.

AOL Pictures is another wonderful Free service from AOL. It provides unlimited photo storage space, I can easier to share my photos with friend. The most important part is that every pictures has their own URL. In other words, I can user the picture link for blog.
