If you watch Alexa Traffic Ranking closely like I do, you probably notice that the traffic ranking was not updated for few days. Today, Alexa has made significant changes to their traffic ranking system. They claim that the ranking system will be more accurate by collecting more data from multiple sources from all over the world.

Alexa Traffic Ranking has been used by many bloggers, web sites and pay per click advertiser to determine the amount of traffic a web site is getting. They will them decide the value of the web site. I have post many articles about Alexa Traffic Ranking and StumbleUpOn. I was using both to gain a lot of attention on the Internet. Now the traffic ranking world is changing.

Will the Alexa Traffic ranking kill StumbleUpOn?

In the past, I have gotten so much traffic from StumbleUpOn, which indirectly boost my Alexa Traffic Ranking. I did not use the traffic ranking to gain any revenue through PPC advertise. However, it was my experiment and observation to see how easy you can manipulate Alexa Traffic ranking by using StumbleUpOn, Digg and many other black-hat tricks. Now those old trick and Alexa toolbar trick will no longer be useful.

In my posts, I talked using Alexa Traffic ranking to evaluate my competition web site’s traffic. In many case, my e-commerce stores has out perform my competitor’s stores. I also use Alexa Traffic Ranking to see they grow rate in the past. This gives me a lot of information about how their business is doing.

With the new changes, you Alexa traffic ranking will be more accurate. Just recently, I found one of my test blog’s traffic ranking dramatically dropped. That site has been getting a lot of StumbleUpOn traffic as sole traffic source. It indicates that StumbleUpOn traffic is no longer play important role to gain traffic.

The site effect is that those who tend to use StumbleUpOn as the traffic booster tool will give up StumbleUpOn. Or just don’t use StumbleUpOn that much any more. If I am correct, we should see StumbleUpOn traffic ranking drop as well.

Personally, I have been using StumbleUpOn for a while and have so much fun with it. I have made some great connection and friendship with StumbleUpOn. I am not giving it up. If you have an online store, you have a niche. Without a niche, you will get lost in the Internet jungle. As an online store owner myself, I build my store front-end first. I have all my store elements ready before starting my blog. Once my store is ready to lunch, I did the following tasks to ensure that my store will be seen on the Internet.

• Register domain name to all Search Engines.
• Register my store URL to free web directory in your niche.

Now You are ready to start your blog for you online store. The goals are to use your blog or blogs to promote your online stores to achieve the following in very short time. I mean less than three months.

Get good Google Page Ranking – PR3+

In the past few months, I have implement a way to get a huge amount of quality backlinks back to your blog and online store, in order to get a better Google Page Ranking. Drive traffic to your online store

It’s your blog. It’s your choice to link and direct your traffic to your online store. I post my hot deals, discount coupon, new products, news, announcement and industry news on my primary blog, which send traffic to my online store. Ideally, you will need to have your own unique domain name for both your online store and blog. For example, my fashion jewelry online store is at www.profashionjewelry.com and my primary blog can be found as subdirectory of my online store at www.profashionjewelry.com/blog/. It’s very important to your success. I will mention that later.

Get a good Alexa traffic ranking

Why you need a blog under your subdirectory, but not your subdomain like blog.your_domain.com? A subdomain is a totally separate identity and site. In other words, Alexa count those two URL as two different sites. When you send traffic from your subdomain blog to your online store, Your traffic is divided into two sites. It gives you no benefit to gain Alexa Traffic Ranking.

Why is Alexa Traffic Ranking important? It simply represents how much traffic goes to your store. The lower number means the topper position your store at in the huge Internet jungle. If you have better Alexa traffic ranking, it will give your store more credit. That’s why you need to have your blog or any other sub-application for your store under the same primary domain. For example, you can have your forum, Wiki and FAQ under the same domain with different subdirectory. Alexa will combine all your traffic into one.

A great branding and exposure to the public

With your blog, you have a greater chance to be known by million people who search on the Internet. Especially for people who search on Google Search Engine. Google has recently implemented Universal Search, which includes blog post. In many case, you blog post is searchable or on the top search result in your niche one hour after you post your article. It gives your reader a strong message that you are active site and store.

Just to make sure that you register your blog with FeedBurner and add your store site map and blog site map on Google WebMaster Tools. Now, you just need to update your blog post at least once a day. It will make your blog expose to million potential readers and customers.

To interact with your potential customer

Two best article topics to post in your niche to attract your potential and interact with them are the HOW-TO and FAQ articles. Regardless what you are selling, people are looking for solutions. If you are selling cell phone, you post topic about how to fix iphone, clean iphone DIY tips and trick. You give your potential customers a sense of your care. They will come back for more.

To compete with your competitors

A blog is a great way to show your competitor that you are making progress while they are not. You can also show your competitors why you are better than they are. One good suggestion is not to write anything crappy or bad mouth about your competitors. It will destroy all your hard working to build your business.

To show your customer that your are serious about your business

Just like I mentioned above, your frequent blog posts will show your customers that you are updating your site and you are serious about your online business. Blog is also a place to answer your customers question and knowing what they are looking for. Keep eyes on your most searchable keywords and make them a blog post or FAQ entry. Your will notify your customer that you have answer for them on your blog. They will come back and give you some love.

Be the number one blog in your niche

Be the number one blog in your niche is very difficult, but very possible. It takes time to get you there, but will pay backs the big time. It’s basically branding your business with a corporation image. That is where my Golden rule becomes the reality. Your brand and market your blog to the top of the world and business opportunities come after that.

Make extra money off your blog

OK. This is not the original intention about your online business. When your e-commerce online store becomes so popular, you will find people coming and go. They search a lot of stuff and get to your site, and they found out that you don’t sell the stuff they are looking for. It’s your chance to fulfill their desire by offering your customer something you don’t sell. For example, I don’t sell really diamond on my store. So I re-direct my customer to a really diamond store for their need. What I am getting is the commission from the sites I list on my blog.

Just to make sure that you do NOT sell any other items on your store. Only do that on your BLOGs.

You want people to buy your stuff, which should be the primary source of your business income.

So how do I do with my Alexa Traffic Ranking now? Is that enough or not enough?

My highest Alexa traffic ranking is 207,742, which went from 5.5 million on June 1st 2007. It’s not bad for a month and half old blog. So does these Alexa traffic ranking number mean a lot to me? You will be disappointed by my answer. My answer is this. “Alexa Traffic Ranking” doesn’t mean a lot to me. It’s just a statistic information about overall traffic to your site. My primary purpose for manipulate Alexa traffic ranking is to boost the traffic to my blog so I can have more readers to view my posts. I did not have any advertisement on my site until few days ago when I post “Should I monetize my blog? It’s never too late to make money online.” Now I only have few small text link ads from AdBrite.com, which makes no profit so far.

This is what my traffic look like on Alexa Traffic Chart. I got no traffic in May 2007. Now I have static traffic from about 500 unique visitors to 2000 unique visitors. It’s up and down, since I stop manipulate the traffic. Is that good enough? Definitely No! Should I continue to manipulate it?

The question should be read as “what should I do to boost my traffic again to the next level?”. Well. As I always believe that “Content is the King.” Without a good quality content, your readers will leave and will never come back. It’s hard to get into top 100K on Alexa Traffic Ranking without a good static traffic. Now my focus will be on the content.

You may have seen many blogs or web sites telling you how to build traffic to your sites or blog pages. Do you wonder why you still not getting the traffic you expect after following all those steps? I do! I get some huge traffic on some of the pages people stumbled, but not all my pages. Are those web sites or blogs telling you the truth?

The first question pop up in my mind is this. How do you attract people to read your blog? I bet that Your answer is pretty close to “Put up something interesting or controversial.” So people will read and see what is going on with it. However, does the viewer receive the information they really expect? How many duplicate information are out there on the Internet and how many are true? I start hating those blogs that put up some stuff just for attracting people to read and make profit from the advertisement. The viewer did not get what they are looking for.

So why are you reading this post? It’s because you are curious about how to build traffic to your web page with StumbleUpOn. I got you! Didn’t I? So you do expect to get something make sense to you, don’t you?

Back to the topic. I don’t like to talk nonsense, even I did sometimes. So what I am telling here is what I have done and what I have experimented for the past few weeks. I am NOT telling you some fancy steps and tricks that will give you 3500 unique user a day like some big “Make money on the Internet with ….” blogger claimed on their blog. They claims that you have to have 300+ thumbs up to be on the home page. That’s not true at all. See how many pages on the home page have less than 5 reviews and 100 thumbs up. You should pay more attention on who first stumble those page.

So am I telling the truth? Use your own judgement. At least, I am not make $$ on my blog.

So let’s begin. StumbleUpOn will not release their algorithm on how they drive the traffic. So no one really knows how that works except those developers. Do you think those big blogger knows? As a programmer, I will try to reverse engineering. Just pretend that I want to duplicate a brand new StumbleUpOn site with more features. Let’s call it “StepOn“. How is that? What will I do to calculate the weight of a page, so it will get more traffic? I asked myself.

So. What is StumbleUpOn’s goal? To build a great community and share what they like. Build-up traffic is just the facts not the purpose and causes. They say so to get your attention. Keep that in mind. So if you try to manipulate the traffic on StumbleUpOn, you will find yourself wasting time.

Once again. Do NOT quote anything I said here. It’s just based on my personal experience and the facts that I observed. We all know how StumbleUpOn toolbar work, so I don’t repeat that here.

What’s the facts of building traffic to your web site through StumbleUpOn?

1. You need someone to stumble your page
2. You need someone to thumb up your page
3. You need someone to review you page
4. You need someone to tag your page
5. You need someone heavy(high score) to list you page in their profile

There are million web pages in StumbleUpOn’s database, how will it decide to show your page to the stumbler? To pick your page out of millions is based on the following facts.

1. The category of your page. A page in the wrong category or less popular category will have less chance to be viewed. I can only tell you that my personal popular categories are photos, humor, blog, internet, technology. I have not test other categories, because my site won’t fit into those categories.
2. The person who first stumble your page is NOT important. It can be anyone. In other words, you can stumble your own page. According the StumbleUpOn TOS, do NOT stumbleUpOn your own page, because it miss the whole point of the StumbleUpOn idea. However, it doesn’t say that you can not have two StumbleUpOn accounts. Got that?
3. Number of reviews with thumb up is very important. You can review a page without thumb up and you can thumb up a page without a review. Either way will carry less weight. So you need to get someone to thumb up and review your page. BOTH!
4. The tag used in the review. With more tags, your page will have higher chance to be listed.
5. The stumbler who stumble you need to have higher score to carry more weight to the page. How does the score calculated? The stumbler have more than 1000 reviews and have more than 200 fans will be consider high score stumbler. According to StumbleUpOn, you can have up to 200-250 mutual friends. The rest will be your fans. The stumbler should also be a very active stumbler in the communities and forums. More active you are the higher score you will have.
6. The page ranking of the stumbler profile page. Have you noticed that some of the stumbler profile page have Google page ranking 6+? Think about the side effect. What will you get, if your page is reviewed and listed on their profile page? Got that?
7. Number of stumblers who thumb up your page is less important. I am not saying it’s not important, but I would rather have 3 thumbs up plus review and right tags than have 100 thumbs up with no review and tag.

According to Darin’s blog. Bloglines is used as a Ranking Factor in a lot of tools lately by some of the Blog for profit companies. Text Link Ads – Blog Juice Calculator, Firefox?s SEO Plugin, and a many others. Well. Ask.Com took over the site and soon will be doing something tricky to be able to gain the search engine market. I also use Google reader, but it is not as fast as BlogLine. I like the blogline interface. I can even see who subscribe my FEED and market available for public to subscribe on blogline. That is great! After join BlogLine, my readership is creased dramatically.

Just today, I received a question from a new StumbleUpOn friend Witchywife, who happened to be a very good cooker. (please add her as your friend). You can find her delicious web site at Janet is Hungry. She asked me if there is a way to stumble a page without StumbleUpOn tool bar installed on her company computers. Absolute yes. However, it will just be not as pretty as toolbar installed. How can I do that with one click?

I create a new bookmarklet “Stumble this” for review a page.

Simply drag and drop the “Stumble this” link to your “Bookmark Toolbar Folder”. It will create a little shortcut for you on your FireFox Bookmark. Note: this option isn’t currently available for IE.

Right-click on the “Stumbled?” link, then select “Add to Favorites” > “Links.”

Depends on your security settings in your IE browser, you might receive a “Security Alert” – “You are adding a favorite that may not be safe. Do you want to Continue?” Press “Yes” to continue.

In order to use this bookmarklet, you have be sure that you already login into StumbleUpOn. Otherwise, it will not work. Now you can just one click to review a page. However, I mentioned earlier that it won’t be as pretty as using the toolbar. Every time you try to stumble a page, you will be asked to review it. You will not have the option to “Thumb Up” or “Thumb Down”. You will always need to review it.

I prefer to review it. Why? Review a page means you are providing your opinion and show the page that you have more respect. In addition, StumbleUpOn might give you more weigh on reviewing a page than just thumb up. So whatever page you just reviewed will carry more weight. Don’t quote me on this.

Why is stumblUpOn so important and became one of the most used social network for blogger? You can visit www.blogcatalog.com and your answers in the discussion board.

So use it as your day to day tool and enjoy it.

Since I started my new blog on June 1st. I post Increase page ranking with DIY marketing strategies on my site. I have continued researching, testing and manipulating Alexa Traffic Ranking. On June 11, I updated the Alexa traffic ranking status on Increase Alexa traffic ranking by 5 million points in 10 days – Just Stumble!. My Alexa traffic ranking went from 5.8 million points to 1.7 million points. That was interesting. I start believing that manipulating Alexa traffic rankings is as easy as social with friends and strangers online. Does it really work?

Now, it’s June 20th. Have I made any progress since June 11th? What is my current Alexa traffic ranking?

This is the historical Alexa traffic ranking of my blog.

As you can see my Alexa traffic ranking jump from nowhere into the 1M border. Now on June 20th, after my hard working and manipulating the Alexa traffic ranking, the ranking jump to 584,691.

So what have I done? And how much traffic I was getting in the past 20 days?

I really like that curve. Don’t you ? As you can see my traffic boosted since June 11th. Now, my question is this. Why my ranking did not jump as much as between June 1st and June 11th, since I have more traffic between June 11th and June 18th? I have heard people saying that the Alexa traffic rankings larger than 1 million are dead web sites. So I was lucky to be alive and get into the 1 millions web sites? I disagree. I have other web sites which have more traffic than this one. They all have Alexa Traffic Ranking greater than 2.2 millions.

As far as I can see, it’s getting harder and harder to get into the top 200K web sites on Alexa Traffic Ranking list. There are many web sites that have static traffic without manipulation. So you can only manipulate your traffic so far. With over a thousand viewer viewing my page, I have boosted my Alexa Traffic Ranking to 580K. Can I continue to boots my ranking to the next level? I doubt that I can get into top 100K, but I might get close to 200K.

After all this manipulation process, I can call it a success. It’s not very hard to manipulate Alexa traffic ranking at all. From this point on, I will have to change my strategies to boost my ranking again. Content become even more important to keep new viewer coming and existing viewer coming back.

So what have I done? If you read my previous posts. You should have some clues that I stumble a lot. I even have a trick that to stumble with Alexa traffic ranking the same time. The key is stumble, stumble and stumble with content relate to Alexa traffic ranking keywords. People will come and read it and you get traffic.

I don’t need people to install Alexa toolbar, it does the Alexa redirection for me. Well. many viewer will disagree the way I do it, but that is the point I am trying to make. You can manipulate your Alexa traffic ranking in such as ridiculous and stupid ways. People will follow and do it. Are they stupid? NO. It’s is because there are so many people want to get higher Alexa traffic ranking in order to get some benefit from it. They totally ignore the facts that Alexa traffic ranking won’t represent their true traffic. There are so many web site out there are making good profit without manipulate Alexa traffic ranking.

All I can say at this point is that I am really enjoyed the Alexa Traffic ranking game. I am prepared that my traffic ranking may drop next months, because I stop manipulation. What I will be focusing on is how to manipulate StumpleUpOn traffic to increase my real traffic with real quality content. I am not saying that I don’t write quality content now. I am trying to improve it as much as I can. I think I have found some pattern and tricks that StumbleUpOn generate the traffic. People review people’s web site and give them thumb up or review, but there is difference between how your viewer review your pages. That make difference in terms of traffic to your sites.

I will see what I come up with next months. It’s time to do something more important and useful.

Well. Again, I am not an Alexa traffic ranking fan, because I don’t believe it. I can now see how easy that I can manipulate the traffic ranking. My traffic is still sucks because my site does not have high Google page ranking or no where to be found on the Internet. The domain name, which shares the same name of the famous Mission Impossible II movie producer. Terence Chang, the name itself is well known by Hollywood. I sometimes got email from people who I have no idea, asking me to help them get into movie business. Read “About” to see who I really am.

Anyway, I was shocked that few hours after I post the Increase Alexa traffic ranking by 5 million points in 10 days – Just Stumble! entry, I found myself on the number 1 spot of Google search result page with search keyword “Increase Alexa traffic ranking“. And 13 spot with “Alexa Traffic Ranking“, which is now at top of the second pages (21st). I got a comment saying that it’s not bad for a new blog.

Am I just lucky? Yes. I definitely think so. This make me believe that how many people are chasing after the Alexa traffic ranking. I got at least 50 unique user visit my page with those keywords in one day. So my web site traffic suddenly goes crazy. I am glad that my ANHosting.com did not disappoint me. It did not crash.

So what is the trick for making that happen? You can go to the post (Click to read) and search keyword “Alexa traffic ranking” and count how many times it appears in the post. Note, none of the them have anchor link. It’s just a straight text. I am not the SEO expert, who can just tell you what was happening.

All I can say is that I pay attention on the keywords I used in the post, in the description meta tag and keyword meta keywords. Also you will definitely need the Google site map plug-in for wordpress. The plug-in will automatically ping Google Blog Search right after publish your post. So in about 2 hours, you can search your post on Google.

After all, I will still insist that Alexa traffic ranking doesn’t mean that you will get traffic. It gets boost up because you have quality content and backlink, so people come to your site and keep coming back. It will them generate the traffic that is monitored by Alexa traffic ranking service.

Now. I am thinking to experiment my theory and practice the search engine optimization. How about I use keywords like “Make money online“, which is used by the number one “Make money online” web giant “John Chow“. Can I become #1 spot on top of John Chow’s web site? Be the number one out of 179,000,000 web pages?

I was on and off with ANhosting.com. Now I am happy with ANhosting for the past 7 days. Even better, I have made a little profit and already covered my cost to host at ANHosting.com for the whole year. Isn’t that nice? I can pretty much say that I host on ANHosting for FREE!

Yeah. The side effect of ANHosting.com problem is that my Blog More @ terencechang.blogspot.com has became one of the top pages when people search “Anhoting sucks, ANhosting issues, Anhosting server crash” on Google. That is just funny that I saw how many people found my pages. In other words, there are many people either are looking for solutions about ANHosting’s problem or are looking for ANhosting.com review. I have found that ANHostingReview.com over rate ANHosting.com services. I don’t even visit that web site until I signed up. I was wondering if I made wrong decision after all those troubles.

In the past two weeks, I have done a lot of work to get more traffic to my site. Here are some tips and tricks I do to improve my blog. My traffic has since boots to almost 1000 unique users a day. And best of all, my host server is still running without down time. I even done a load test trick(tab browsing) to force load all my 100 posts at the same time.

I singed up ANHosting.com and joint their affiliate program right after I signed up ANhosting.com. Not like other hosting companies. You don’t have to be their customer to join affiliate program. I just received the notice that I have made few customers signup through my referral. Wow. That is great. I don’t even push it at all. Thanks to my viewers. I am just hoping that ANHosting.com equally treat all their customers. So there is no more server problems.
