In the dark

Are you a self-started entrepreneur, who is working alone in the dark all the way from the beginning to the end? While working alone on my journey to become a successful entrepreneur, there are many many challenges in front of me. As a long time chief software architect and web application developer, I know I really need to speed up in the business world.

While my web programming is getting close to go live, it is far beyond completion. I know it’s not necessary to go public until it’s perfect, because it will never be perfect. Working on my new project brought me so much fun. I realized that I have to pick up new technique every single day. Integrate with Google Map, third party API, or future development with mobile phone are not the challenges to me at all.

The really challenges is on my way.

I felt that I am walking alone in the dark on my journey with only one small lamp. I know where I am heading to, but I am uncertain what I will run into. A dear? A tree or a car heading to me? So I started reaching out to local people like me. I am hoping to find other people who felt like walking alone in the dark. We can put our lights together and make our journey a brighter one.

I felt guilty that I did not actually code everyday. I spent one day coding and one day social on the Internet or offline. The coming startup weekend in Phoenix gets me so exciting. I want to meet many people like me. I also attended the local Club E Network, which inspired me a lot on how to reach out for help.

My biggest challenge is actually writing, since English is my secondary language. Fortunately, I have friends who is willing help me out. Here are some of the tasks that I have to finish.

  1. Pick the company name and domain name
  2. Register a new company and get Tax ID
  3. Setup new bank account and merchant account
  4. Get NDA (non-disclosure agreement) finished.
  5. Get first press release draft done
  6. Prepare all the text material for web site.
  7. Prepare marketing materials
  8. Meet more media people and find a way to penetrate into local TV and Radio stations.
  9. Collect customer information and material for direct mail
  10. Attend the Web 2.0 Expo next year
  11. Contact targeted customers and provide free trial out.
  12. Pick the right affiliate platform to integrate to the web site

I will need to hire people or out source tasks to people who can really do the work well. I find there are so many interesting people with different skill sets out there on social network, including Internet Marketer, Screen Writer, Press Release writer, Bill collector, iPhone app developer and conference trainer and so on.

indeed. that’s the tricky thing about being an entrepreneur. you’re on your own, without the structure of employment to move you and guide you. good luck with that.

    hey Terence!
again, as always when reading your posts, I so understand where you are coming from. I have been writing a lot lately and with the dollar going down in comparison to “my money” the Euro sometimes times are really tough to see the light at the end of the tunnel.

i guess it is normal to feel alone as an online marketer, maybe that is why all those social bookmarking sites are such a great hit, after all, people are not meant to be alone. after having following your blog for many many months now i am sure you will get through though and find it very positive to read that you are building your own business network of people who cooperate with you and work on the same goal.

as always, I will be back to read about your progress!!

Thanks! I am used to work in the startup environment. I will end up be the boss, so I will get used to it anyway.

Yup! After attending the Startup Weekend in Phoenix, I have met some great people and will start a new adventure on my side. I need to get my hands dirty on many things. Offline social networking has been great in the past months. I just need to get my site done and start testing it.

Will keep you post! Thank you for the support!

I was scared of the entrepreneur thing until I found a program that didn’t really cost much (under 20.00 for some supplies I needed (ie: 21 stamps and envelopes) and gave it a shot. For the beginner I would suggest giving it a try to anyone… I got started through the mail but they now offer the service online just google search free birthday money it is a wonderful program that I have had much success with. It really is free to join. It has been a blessing to us. Remember, like anything, STICK WITH IT through the thin times and the THICK times will be WELL WORTH IT:) Good LUcK!
