Blog Post Header Images - collection 1
I have been asked by few readers with the following questions.
- Do you sell the photos you used on you blog?
- How do you choose the photos?
- How do you know what to do to modify your image?
I will answer all questions one by one. First of all, using blog post image is a fun but time consuming task. My resources for my photos are either from the creative common licensed photos on Flickr.com and the photos I took in the past. Here are my answers to the readers.
Do you sell the photos you used on you blog?
My simple answer is NOT NOW. Due to the creative common license, I don’t intend to sell the photos I found from Flickr.com. However, I may sell the photo that I took with my Nikon D70S Digital camera. I love taking photos, especially the photo on my journey of travel around the world. I believe that I have unique taste and view about photography. I did take some great shot, but I am far away from being a professional photographer.
How do you choose the photos?
This is a question about imagination. Based on my blog design and theme, I want my blog post image to be 600×140 pixels. When I look at am image or a photo, I look the photo with a square and rulers in my mind. I want to focus on the important section of the photos that can describe the post I will be writing. I use my imagination to visualization to crop the image. If the image I crop can do what I want, I will favorite the photo on my Flickr.com profile.
How do you know what to do to modify your image?
In my mind, the photos will be either black & white or very colorful. My only photo editing tool is Adobe Photoshop. When I found a photo that will fit my need. I go to the photo detail pages with different size available. I choose the size around 1024×768 pixels. I right click and copy the image.
I paste the image into Photoshop. Depends on my imagination, I will resize the image to 600 pixels wide. As you see above, I remove the bottom part of the image and leave only the center portion. I also apply auto color, auto level and adjust the contrast to make the flower stand out. I apply burn tool to darken the right and left sides of the image. In many case, I use photo with object. To make your object standout, I choose photo that was taken with larger aperture and zoom in lenses. It makes the background blur. If the object background is very clear, I will manually blur the background.
After all, I have started a new blog a while back. I want to share my photos with my families. I do not want to take space on this blog to post the header images and the reasons why I choose them. If you like the blog post image I use on my blog, you can read more about them on My Photo Blog.

Hi Terence,
As you know, I’m trying this technique out on one of my blogs. I actually follow a very similar process to you, except I use Fireworks instead of Photoshop (and I don’t do as much processing - don’t have the skills or the time!).
I don’t use Flickr favourites either, I just copy them to my hard drive and keep the original links in an Excel file. I’d like to get more into Flickr when I have the time.
