@Xiou:

Learning different languages is always a good thing. I wished that I know more languages. It is very important to know what Chinese is saying when buy stuff from them. It will be easier for you to get a better price if you speak Chinese.

Regarding to the wage, I have never worked in China. It also depends on who your employee is. If you work for US company, your wage is much higher. The average worker salary in China is very low compare what we get here in US.

The living cost in China is much cheaper than in other countries. Anyway, your life will be much easier if you can speak Mandarin.

Hi Terrence, I wanted to know whether knowing Mandarin/cantonese is essential when going to or working in china. I have started to learn mandarin and hoping to partly learn it by next year. Hopefully this will help me when traveling in china.
Also how much is the typical wage if you work in China i.e. doing a office job? Is it worth it (I am currently living in from London)

@Andrew:

Thank you for the link. Yes. Since China opens their door to the western world. China has became the world largest product supplier country. In order to do more business with other countries, they need a lot of foreigners to work in China. Many American corporation are hiring people who can speak Mandarin and English to work in China.

For foreigner, working in China is not a problem. To get used to their environment and culture are tough though.

Would you mind to share your working, living experience in China with us? Thanks!

@Recliners:

Ha. Don't take too long to get your promise done. You need to give yourself a good treatment. With over 5 thousand years history, there are a lot of things can't just change in few years. In the new era, Chinese is doing better to accept the new world and the opinions from western world.

@Stephen:

Thanks! I hope to see some great posts. I bet you do an awesome job!

Terence,

Thank you so much for this post. Now the pressure's on! :)

I love China. I love the vibrancy, the energy, the food, the people, the lifestyle - the difference from what I'm used to. But there are many things which aren't so great: environment, office politics, bureaucracy, hospitals, to name just a few.

I'm hoping to give people a realistic view on life here, so they can learn about the real China and as you say: work, travel, have fun, live and survive in China as foreigners. Although the blog's targeted at foreigners, I'd also like to help Chinese people understand foreigners - at times we must be a real mystery to them.

Thanks for your support. And Terence - yet another fantastic image in this post!

I find China fascinating and a little inscrutable. I think it is because of the fact that it is an ancient civilization with a history that goes way back. One day i will visit, i promised myself that a while back!

@Dining Tables:

Never say never. You may be moving to other countries for retirement. You don't like Hong Kong and Taiwan? I guess it's not because the Chinese foods, Is it?

If you don't like the big environment, you probably don't like China either. :-)

@Mark:

No problem. May be you can start writing something about your life on the island. :-)
