I think Westerners also have a kind of ‘face-saving’ mechanisms when it comes to situations of differing opinions/ potential conflict of interests. Face, after all, is about looking good to others… We all want to look good.

Chinese often face-save by telling white lies and avoidance. Westerners expect direct communication, hard talk, and will see this as a sign of respect and wholesome character (see German culture for example).

So there is a different mechanism to dealing with conflict in each case- neither being better than the other! I think it is fascinating…

Trust is something hard earned in China… this maybe explains the prevalence of baijiu in business dealings (enough alcohol will reveal the other when his defenses are down). Just an idea!

In China, online business is not like in the other countries. e-Commerce in China is not very convenient and secure. Too much fraud around because of lacking good online payment system. People are used to pay by cash. There is also no return policy. Once the goods is out of door, it’s not refundable. So doing online business in China is still not mature enough.

That’s right. I felt funny when I decided to talk about how Chinese doing business. The way Chinese doing business are so much different between Taiwan, Hong Kong, China and Chinese from many other countries. Most likely the education play am important role.

I have dealt with online business for sometimes. Dealing with real people face to face are so much different.

Chinese are sometimes too superficial. They don’t look too far in the business world.
