Backpack Journey 2007 – Chinese food paradise in Guangzhou

Few days ago, I post Backpack Journey 2007 – Guangzhou Treasure hunting. I have had a good time hunting treasures. I have walked a lot and are hungry all the time. If you know a little bit about Chinese culture, you know that Chinese treat “eating” as the first thing and most important thing in their life. Chinese love eating. Hungry is the worst thing that Chinese hated.

Ever since China opened the door to western world. KFC and Macdonald became two of the favorite fast restaurants in China. In the USA, Macdonald and KFC are most likely treated as cheap fast food restaurants. What about that in China?

In contrast, eating fast food at Macdonald and KFC is a big thing. The price is equally the same in USA based on the living cost and average earning. It’s quite expensive to eat at Macdonald and KFC. However, if you like traditional Chinese food, you can find it very cheap at some places.

You can clearly see Macdonald, KFC, Papa John and many other Chinese fast food restaurants right next to each others. You can also see a bank near by. Chinese pay cash in most of the case.

In Guangzhou, many small traditional Chinese food stations or vendors are making big money by selling fish ball and pig blood cake. As you can see, people are buying some traditional fish ball bowl and eat just right on the street.

In some traditional Chinese restaurants, you can have two huge BBQ pork rice bowls, soup and vegetable dishes for just US$2.00. You heard it right. Two US dollars for two hungry travelers like my wife and me. Or you can get fish ball rice noodle bowl and spicy rice noodle for just under US$3.00.

There are some many traditional Chinese food restaurants you can choose from. It’s almost like a food paradise to me. One thing you just need to be aware of, if you want to eat in China. Pick the restaurant that looks clean. It’s very expensive if you need to buy medicine or see doctor to fix your sick stomach. So get some over the counter medicine for your stomach while packing your luggage.

Do you like Chinese foods? Come to the food paradise in Guangzhou!

  1. Believe me, KFC, McDonald, Papa John or whatever… These are supremely unhealthy foods, I might say that these are junk foods that filling our body with garbage nutritions.

I prefer Chinese foods to above foods I’d mentioned.

    Nice journey…

Well. Chinese really like Chicken. That’s why KFC is much more popular than McDonald here in China. Regardless their nutrition ingredients, It does taste really good here. They have some burger that in Chinese favor. You should come and try it out.

Many Chinese food are prepare un-healthy either. Chinese use a lot of cooking oil, which is not good either.

  3. Yes, Chinese cooking uses loads of oil, so it’s not particularly healthy, but I think it is still much better than KFC. It is a little sad that KFC is so popular here – I’ve noticed that Chinese children are fatter now than when I first came to China 5 years ago.

Anyway, Chinese food is very delicious! And it is so cheap here compared to the west. What a great combination! Another thing I like – lots of little dishes that people share, instead of being locked into one dish just for you. I’m not so keen on the ganbei-ing though, especially when people gang up on you!

I bet you are very familiar with Chinese eating culture now. You seem to like it a lot. I don’t know if you are a smoker or not. I really hate the smoking environment in China. That’s right. People from northern China love to drink. If you drink with them, you are their best friends.

  5. I love the food, not the smoking (I don’t smoke either). But to be honest, we don’t eat out very often.

I bet you really enjoy the Chinese foods. Just be careful when you eat out. Pick the clean one.

  7. I have been in some Chinese Restaurants that you could eat off the floor. Then others, you would be safer eating off the floor:)
