I was looking for solution to protect my comments. Ever since I joined No Nofollow | I Follow | DoFollow Community on BumpZee, I got so many spam comments waiting for me to delete.
Do you have a lot of spam comment? You can check out the following plugin to protect your comment.
The new comment spam protection is a small wordpress plugin, which will add a little human touch. You have to provide a answer to a math question to add your comment. I found the solution from one of my favorite blog “Blogging tips & www social trends” at http://www.mapelli.info/. I am happy that I read his post about “Active Dofollow & Comments Policy.”
I have just added the comment policy as well. You can download the plugin from math question antispam plugin. It’s very easy to install on your existing WordPress blog software. Give it a try. It worth the effort.
If you find a better way to protect your comment from spam, please let me know.

I am surprised I haven’t gotten more spam so far. My main blog hasn’t had any yet (that I remember), but my less active blogs–the ones I haven’t posted on in a while–have gotten spam comments.
And, they were “pure” spam comments–there was no effort to add to the discussion at all–not even a basic “nice post” or anything. Just links to websites (with odd URLs) and some content that made no sense (probably trying to get past any automated spam-sensing features some blogs may have).
Right now, it hasn’t gotten to the point where I am looking at adding a spam prevention plugin just yet. Thanks for the link to this plugin. I have seen it on a number of blogs, and this is the one I would most likely use first. And, now I know where to find it!
@dcr:
Since I put up the plugin, I have not received ANY spam comments. I don’t know if it is working due to this plugin or just lucky. I will keep you post.
Thanks!
@terence math comments rock ..once you have traffic and your alexa rank is high !! the spam will surely bust you..Hence always protect your blog with one..
). Akismet spam protection is also an option but, when i installed it , it put legit message also in moderation … But from the time i installed Math plugin … No Spam at all
.. and yeah deactivated akismet.
Moreover it doesn’t make you squint and is not that complicated asking to retype the word written in weird alphabets (i get them wrong half of the times
wow, “one of your favourite blogs” thanks!
The plugin seems to work like a charm, I’ve not disabled akismet, yet, but that’s something I’ll try in a not so distant future.
I found necessary to add this plugin because sometimes Akismet let some spam comments pass, and having, like you, the email notification plugin enabled, I wanted to be sure that no spam was sent to my readers…
@kanak:
That’s right. this plug rocks. I have not received any spam since I enabled it! Akismet doesn’t always work right.
@francesco mapelli:
I read your RSS Feed everyday to see if there is anything exciting like this plugin. Thanks to you! I got no spam so far! The only thing this plug does’t do right is the email domain used in the plugin, It shows my email as subdomain of my primary hosting account domain. TerenceChang is an add-on domain of others. So the host_name valuable is showing different domain.
Anyway, thank you so much. Keep me exciting.
I discussed this issue on one of my blogs quite recently and it amazed me that so many WP users only used Akismet as apam protection.
I’ve been using a captcha on all of my sites for some time and it virtually eliminates comment spam from bots overnight.
I recently posted a list of the plugins I used over at
http://thecaymanhost.com/product-reviews/the-best-wordpress-plugins
and then discovered that the captcha I was using (CAPCC) was conflicting with my moderation queue after upgrading to the latest version of WP – it allowed all comments to go through without moderation! I thought about using the one you now have here, but eventually went for another, called Peter’s Custom Anti Spam. It’s let two spam bot comments through to the moderation queue so far, whereas CAPCC never allowed a single one to appear, so I shall be monitoring it carefully.
A lot of people say that captchas are annoying and stop people from commenting, but I don’t believe that for a minute. If someone is prepared to type a comment, they will usually be happy to complete the short captcha too.
Whether you are a ‘dofollow’ blog or not, the combination of forced moderation, captcha and Akismet will save you a lot of grief. If you have trackbacks enabled on your site I also strongly recommend using something like the Simple Trackback Validation plugin.
All these anti spam measures can be found at the WP Codex Plugins pages, just search plugins for “spam”.
@Maurice:
Thank you for sharing! I will give captcha a try. I do use captcha on my other e-commerce sites. You do have a great list of plugins. I should also check the trackback plugin. That sounds interesting.
awesome …
your plugin is working really perfect..

@John:

I appreciate that you keep this blog going and allow comments. To me feedback is an interesting part of a blog.
