There is a news on News.com about western companies in China.
“Who from the West is doing well in China?”
It mentioned many of the top 100 IT companies such as Apple, Yahoo, Microsoft, Amazon, IBM, Dell and Google, but none of them are doing as good as they expect. As a native Chinese, I have to say that the leaders in those companies don’t fully understand Chinese culture and the shopping habits. It’s a totally different worlds. Most western companies are thinking China as big pie and a big market. They have not thought trough what’s on Chinese’s mind and how they think about Western world and culture? Forget about the government. Doesn’t matter how government control their internet and information, the government is always the last one to know the new tips and tricks to get the good stuff.
I am not in the position to judge how those fortune 100 companies should do to increase their profit in China. I would love to work for those companies as consultant and help them do business with Chinese. What really motivates me to write up my opinions about this topic is the opportunities I see for small business in China. Look at how many products you see in Wal-Mart are made in China. How many HDTV you see at Costco and bestbuy are made in China as well?
Who made those products? A lot of small manufactures who signed the contract to work for big distributors, who produces branded products for those big company. For example, HP laptop are made in China and sold in the US and them import back to China as high-end laptop. Chinse buys that.
Funny things is that my sister-in-law just recently have a little baby girl, their parents came to USA and bought a new baby car-seat and carry it back to China. Why? The baby car-seat is made in China, but they are NOT available in China. So Chinese came to US and bought something made in China and take it back to China.
So what is the point here. There are many made-in-china products not available in China. There is huge opportunities for small business to export those products back to China with 3 times higher price. People from China buy those product and pay for higher shipping cost. You may think people in China are poor, but you might not know how rich those rich people are.
That’s right. Here comes my potential. I will get back to you all on this few years later. ![]()

Thanks for visiting mine as well. I finally start blogging seriously. I have much to learn from many people like you. Internet is not just about technology, marketing and search engine optimization. It’s for fun too.
I really enjoy your blog. Great job!
Yes, west does not understand China, or really Asia. Dynamics are way different, as there is no middle class developed yet with spending power.

Thank you for comments. Yeah. China is a big cake. It’s matter of how to cut the big piece.
I spent some time in China and it knocked me out. I had a great time and could not even speak any Chinese.

Well. Next time you visit China, let me know before hand. I would love to show you around. There are many places I went in China are so wonderful. I have to admit that that living in China is no longer cheap. Some of their stuff like cloth and shoes are more expensive than in the US.
I’m an Australian who’s been living in China for a couple of years and I agree that most westerners don’t understand China (and I’m not saying I do either!). The way of doing business here is so different to that in the west. Also, I agree about the rich people – there are a LOT of rich people here and they are really rich. Much richer than I’ll ever be…

Terence, Yes, I’m having a great time in China – I love it here. The problem with letting you know about interesting things, is that there are too many! I highly recommend that people visit China and keep an open mind.
